CLIFFS ERIE (former LTV Steel Mining Company)
In late July Cliffs Erie indicated that they would NOT operate any ore moves
during 2005. There is, however, potential for movements in 2006. The
ore in the dock will remain there until then. Update: as of
March 2006 Cliffs had still not determined when the remaining ore would be
shipped from Hoyt Lakes to Taconite Harbor.
LAKE SUPERIOR RAILROAD MUSEUM
In late May of 2005 the museum had their former Soo Line GP30 No. 700 repainted by the
Wisconsin Southern and it is now back in Duluth. Be sure to stop by and
catch a glimpse of this shiny locomotive.
CN-DM&IR
Former Bessemer & Lake Erie SD40T-3s Nos. 903 and 910 were spending time
around Pokegama in early 2006 as transfer and helper engines. The orange
engines are east to spot.
As of April
1 there are three former DM&IR 400 series engines repainted in CN paint but sub-lettered
for DM&IR. Those engines include 400, 401, and 402.
Dispatching functions for the former Missabe were moved from Keenan to Stevens
Point on June 28, 2005. The CN Rainy Sub dispatcher (DW&P) now handles the
Missabe Subdivision north from Pokegama Yard to the Iron Range while the CN Iron Range Dispatcher handles the Iron Range
Subdivision as well as the line form Proctor to the Duluth Docks. CN's former
Wisconsin Central Superior Subdivision dispatcher handles all movements south of
Pokegama Yard. Dispatcher radio channel is now AAR 16 (160.350) for both
the former DW&P and the DM&IR.
Union
Pacific
In late 2005 the UP began operating daily trains in and out of CN's Pokegama
Yard in Superior. These trains usually have both CN and UP engines for
power. M-DMCN and M-CNKC are the symbols typically used.
